In a boat like this there 1 master 1 counter master, the job of the counter master is enforce maritime law but since ever in Portugal the counter master job is to protect the men from the master. And in proper boats the counter master is elected by the fishermen you can not vote unless the other fishermen see you as full fledge. In fishing you don't have fixed salary you get payd a part the master gets 2 and the counter gets one and a quarter. Like imagine u make 15k in one trip, the owner of the boat gets half, the expenses and the rest is devided in equal parts amoug the men. In this boat we did not have a toilet so we shitted with out ass sitted or squatting at the edge of the boat holding the roses for dear life because we didn't want the cut in the pay to buy a toilet. The sea is a different universe

It has been like this in Portugal for 500 years in the old days a captain could legally hang its crew for pretty much any reason so The D. Manuel I gave rights to the counter master to block this action and even if the crew consented to jail the master untill land is reached and delivery him to the authorities. A counter master can be changed at any moment if the crew finds consensus throw vote. There is really so much to explain I would take all night
