In Finland, there were two forest gods, Tapio and Hiisi. Tapio was a forest god of the Häme people and lived with his people in Tapiola. In turn, Hiisi of the Karelian people lived in the depths of the salo, in Hiitola. With the advent of Christianity, Hiisi became a devil. Tapio has been the most beloved god of the Finns and was also the most respected.

Tapio has also been called elf or a king. The Empire of Tapio was therefore the place where he lived with his people. Tapio's forces are Tapio's maids and drudges. The task of the people was to beautify and clean the forest, and to take care of the plants and animals.

Tapio's wife was Mielikki. They have three children, Tellervo, Tyytikki and Tuulikki. Sometimes a daughter named Annikki is also mentioned.

Tapio was the one who decided to hunt, he was the keeper of the game. Tapio had the opportunity to change his size according to the environment. Tapio was in the woods everywhere. In the woods, Tapio was tall as the trees, on clearings he was the size of grass.

Tapio left a lot of traces in the forest. Today, these traces would be called witch's broom. If someone wanted to approach Tapio, then he had to go to the woods.
