What makes North Americans obsess over their heritage so much? I cringe every time I see a youtube comment mentioning how they are "proud to be 20% Norwegian". Can someone give me a non meme answer?

The entire new world operates on race. Everyone here is obsessed with wither pretending to be (or not be) white.

For blacks, yeah. But for the whites I've met who feel this way it's a little different. They usually know they're American, but either don't want to be for whatever reason or they're shallow and find their own culture "boring". Either way, they turn to their European ancestors and where they came from and use it as either absolution for perceived national sins or as a fashion statement.
TL;DR they're fucked in the head.

We don't, it's another one of those "DO AMERICANS REALLY" things. To the extent that people do, its because a lot of Americans are of a mixed ethnic background and are interested to where their ancestors were from.

The concept of a general white-American or anglo-american identity died out arounds the 1970s. Everything has gone down to such a consumer cancer that there are almost no elements of heritage or tradition anymore, boomers would rather push their situation as the tradition than the actual one.
As a result of this, there is a distinct lack of identity even among people who identity as American and not European. Big tits and hamburgers only go so far culturally, so people embrace their heritage or whatever pseudo-heritage they have.

Yes, but at one point or another white in US just meant anglo-american which did have its own legitimate cultures that developed. Once we embraced mass consumption and pop culture it ended.
