well for one it's ugly as shit most of the time

politics

>Japanese artists
Let's make your characters as cute as possible!

>Western artists
Let's make our characters are repulsing as possible!

no one is interested in having the political fad of the week shoved down your throat in the form of colored latex capeshit.

Full of stupid bullshit that manages to out cringe anything japan could put out

American comics are too complicated but that said people aren't flooding theaters to see the latest "Naruto Endgame" or "DBZ Endgame"..

They used to.
The main problems I see are as follows:

-failure to adapt properly. The last time US comics were really popular was during the 90s, when they did a lot of grimdark remakes. It sold, but got of course stale. They didn't migrate from this stage to something interesting but are currently trying to rely on social issues.

-Too many reboots and events. Back in the day events were something special, these days Marvel shits out an huge crossover event each and every year. The same goes with reboots. DC rebooted their lineup more than I care to count in the last decade, and fucked it up worse and worse. Graphic novels don't share these issues, currently sell better and even find recognition in the mainstream media.

-Ancient publishing structure that caters to the industry giants.

>comics are too complicated
Sure it is, burger bro

I think their market basically just lacks variety

Another point that helps Manga is imho related to the way young people comunicate these days. Manga are layouted in a way that facilitates quick reading. Furthermore long text passages are not the norm. US comics try to cramp more text into each page, which makes them more akin to a picture book, while a manga is more dynamic.

Never forgetti

I tried, got bored awfully fast, it's cringy af.
A better question would be why franco belgian comics seem so hard to export, because there's actually some good stuff in there.

I think he means that you need to know a lot about the characters and events that happened before to appreciate them, since the multiverses of the big companies are so tightly interwoven.

They're immensly popular here at least

I think it's because american comics focussed on one thing: superheroes.
Meanwhile manga is diverse in what it adapts and in what original content it makes.
That said I don't think either are too popular in Bulgaria.

Not really, the problem with comics i had was mostly the constant reboots that became a pain in the ass. Manga is a lot more concise, the past remains the past and the only changes are revelations. Red Hood and the Outlaws (2016) is the only series i haven't dropped after issue 3.

In the "Golden Age" of comic books (up to, including, and lasting a bit after WW2), the American comic book market was incredibly diverse. You had the origin of the big superhero's that last until today, but you also had horror, romance, comedy, tales of suspence, erotica et cetera. It was as varied and contested as the manga market. However, during the 50's America has one of its infamous moral outrages and blamed comic books for juvenile delinquency. Fearing government intervention, the comic book industry decided to be one step ahead and created the Comics Code Authority, which was a form of self-censorship. This effectively meant that the only comic books that could be published were about "All-American superhero's" who taught good and proper morals. This is where the Adam West style Batman came from, the Batman who never killed his enemies and never used guns because guns are bad! The comic book market never recovered from this and to this day superhero comics are almost the only ones that get published.

This also cemented the dominance of Marvel and D.C. This not only meant that the market was barely driven forward by competition, it also created a fixed cast of known names with new faces rarely being added. This also very much limited talented artists and writers, as they were now forced to write already existing characters if they wanted to be published.

Compare the manga market, that never had a Comics Code Authority equivalent. It's market is still very much divided (Shonen Jump is the closest thing to a Marvel or D.C. and even its grip on the Shonen market (let alone the entire manga market) is nowhere near as absolute), very diverse and with a very low barrier to entry. If you want to become a mangaka, you don't need to knock on the door of one of the only two companies that matters and write the stories and characters they want you to write, you can start out writing porn in your basement and get it published as a mainstream story.

The artstyle is too cartoonish, almost Italian comics tier.

American comics are too centralized around two big dog corporations (DC and Marvel) and both of those are too centralized around a select few characters. There's nothing new with comics.

Aren't comic books incredibly self-referential to the point where they are classified by the two big clumps of self-reference - Marvel and DC.
Who would want to get into something in which he will be so behind the curve he'd need to read wikis.
I blame the failure of Star Wars to pick up in China on the same thing, chinamen don't know who Han Solo, the Jedi and Luke Skywalker are and don't care unless you give them a reason to care in the movie.

The year is 50 BC and Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans
Well, not entirely. One small village of indominatable Gauls still holds out against the invaders.

That's an interesting bit of history.
You learn something new every day.

Pretty much. It's why Marvel shits out like 5 different capeshit movies every year.

What I also forget was that the diarchy of the American comic books market opened up the way for it to be manipulated by ideologues, especially by lefties and feminists (who are infamous for practicing entryism). They use it as a soapbox for their intellectually bankrupt philosophies because the American comic book reading audience as no real alternative (other than manga, which recently gained popularity in the States). This also contributes to why American comics are shit.

Compare again manga. Imagine if even the giant Shonen Jump started doing this kind of shit and insulting their target audience. Most Shonen Jump readers would switch to reading Gangan Joker, Monthly Comic Blade or one of the many other already existing Shonen publishers (as well as new ones that would undoubtedly pop up to fill the void if Shonen Jump decided to commit sudoku).

Pic related. And let's not forget Thor (female) breaking some guy's jaw because he talked smack about feminism.

fpbp

Also the stories are childish or trashy

There are also a few outliers like Top Cow that make good stuff

The movies are a clean slate that started from 0.

Perhaps it's the "album" format? Too big, too expensive?

Isn't this the manga that started as a doujin?

Well, that's really not subtle, it looks like Soviet-tier propaganda.

Pif the dog (pic related) was a popular commie comic in the 50s-90s, but it was never stupidly political like that.

It's the opposite.

Don't know why it didn't post pic (I uploaded it desu)

Attached: PIF-ET-CIE.jpg (469x500, 39K)

Yep. Furthermore...
>One Punch Man started as a web comic
>Shield Hero started as a web novel
>Nagatoro started as those infamous stills
>Monster Musume started out as porn shorts
Also a lot of mainstream authors did porn before becoming famous, like the guy who does Shokugeki no Soma (if it wasn't obvious). If you're talented enough and people like what you write/draw, it's only a matter of time before a magazine picks up on it and starts publishing you.

Nobody ever accused lefties of being subtle.

>US comics try to cramp more text into each page, which makes them more akin to a picture book, while a manga is more dynamic.
Not anymore. Read Wolverine #1 and Old Man Logan #1 (post Secret Wars, not the original Old Man Logan) to see the difference.

Here's an actual communist comic in France:

>Wow!
>What?
>Did you know the average individual only has 5,000 words in his vocabulary?
>In his WHAT?
>Well, let's say 4,999...

Not all comics.

Attached: Thorgal.jpg (1927x2560, 1.42M)

well that's true just look at the fate series.
Started as an eroge game and now it's one of the most profitable anime franchise of all the time.

Western comics are mostly about cape wearing superheroes, which isn't something for everybody. Well or cartoons in the form of donald duck or similar, which is largely for kids.

Manga is waaaay more leftist. FMA was one of the most anti-american franchises ever for instance.

American pop culture shifted to Hollywood

Being anti-american isn't leftist you brain rotting mongrel

>being anti-american while being the citizen of a foreign country is being leftist
Do you ever forgot to breath considering how retarded you are?

>Arrows on the left

And... dropped.

How so?

If you anti-american you are likely a leftist.

Ah, who could forget about the infamous leftists such as Adolf Hitler or Osama bin Laden

From what i was able to tell sbout it, it's your typical fantasy novel. Don't get me wrong, i can see the appeal to it, but it fills a very niche spot that Manga beats due to how diverse it can be.

Hitler was a socialist.

So was George Washington

marx wasn't even born

marx didn't invent socialism

This dude hasn't read HxH

Shit stories, they like to bring politics in them, they shit on characters who were great in the past, the authors are cucks who bitch on social media giving the comic they make bad name, women in the industry, etc

Because graphic novels are better
Also, western animation >>>> an*me

Isn't it more popular tho? I mean comics and cartoons are mainstream. You see them everywhere but anime and manga are niche?

pretty much what said

Love Japanese artists' use of the visual medium.

Why don't Americans like Don Rosa?

Do they not know what they're missing out on?

fuck off kurwa pshek

Pretty much this. It’s a tool for political
Ideology. Some of the comics aren’t too bad but the majority of them are unbearable

Most Americans don't read comics, and the ones that do would rather not read ones about Disney characters

>Chinese anime
>portrays Marx as a blue-eyed aryan
>portrays Germans as crooked nose jews

They made captain marvel a girl so it's SJW cringe now. Comics are just too political.

good old times

Beautiful

If comics are leftist then why is Frank Miller still allowed to make blatant fascist shit?

>If [trend] then why [isolated counterexample]?

We have French comics here. The real question is why aren't Bulgarian comic popular and seem so hard to export.

It's a bitter pill to swallow, but there are two kinds of media globally speaking
>American
>Whatever Americans take interest in

>why franco belgian comics seem so hard to export
They're full of Franco-Belgian cultural references and wordplays. How are foreigners supposed to understand "Panoramix" or "Babaorum"?

Unappealing art like what you posted.

Lacks the "style" and coolness Japanese designs have.

>It's a bitter pill to swallow, but there are two kinds of media globally speaking
>American
>Whatever Americans take interest in
Not really. You can clearly see it with movies where they bomb in the states and make up their money globally. You can see it with books you can see it with everything. The global market is way bigger than just America. They are just 300+ mil.

>"Panoramix"
This has to be from Asterix and Obelix, it has to be!

>Not really. You can clearly see it with movies where they bomb in the states and make up their money globally.
Yeah, like how Michael Bay only keeps making movies because the Chinese lap that shit up. Those are still American movies. If something non-American bombs in the states, it will almost certainly not catch on globally. There are only very few exceptions in this regard.

because 90% of it is boring 100x retconned capeshit

>very few exception
How much is very few? It's a lot of exceptions at this point. You probably didn't even know they were exceptions.

Also the pricing is horrendous. Up to 5 bucks for a new issues thinner than a fucking scalpel.
