Japanese uses a lot of words that are pronounced the same way but mean different things and kanji is there help differentiate them when reading.

Alphabetic writing is and will always be superior to Logograms/Pictograms.

The problem is that Chinese and Japanese have a limited phonology and are full of homophones

Vietnamese has (iirc) almost 4 times the number of potential syllable than chinese does. Mao actually wanted to replace characters with pinyin but it was just too impractical and thus dropped.

Using romaji for jap would be a little better but still would be difficult due to it all being syllabic. Though i suppose you could argue that they could just drop kanji and only use the kana. Still impractical tho

How is this impractical?
After a week of learning an alphabetic writing you can bacially read all texts in the language.

For chinese and Japanese:
After 9 years of learning your writting you can read at last the common literature even not all the more specific one.

It is entirely out of question what is impractical here.

chinese only has ~1600 potential syllables.

If chinese can use homophones in speech without confusion then they can also use them written.
Also indicators can be used. Just put a '^° or what ever like pretty much all the others do including vietnamese.

They're already going to need diacritics for tones, so they'd need double diacritics. It's be even uglier than Vietnamese
