Another big thing is that this mentality remained even after independence, the ruling classes were just worried about using the government to keep their private assets valuable and taking the hit whenever the international market fluctuated the wrong way, unlike the US which actually had some national pride and a considerable number of people that genuinely wanted America to be great. Ultimately the late industrialization and lack of direction made us weak and susceptible to US interference.
