All of my grandparents were born in the twenties in European ethnic neighborhoods in Chicago. Their families ranged from working class to upper middle class. None of their parents had gone to college. Then World War 2 happened and mixed everything up. Old cultural bonds were made weaker and new opportunities arose. All four of them went to college, met there, and got married. They joined the growing upper midfle class and moved out to traditionally WASP suburbs (my grandpa even changed from being Lutheran to Congregational, the classic WASP religion).
Today, I am le mutt 25% of four Euro ethnicities, but culturally am a WASP almost entirely

before 'american' was an ethnicity option, the US censuses had british as the predominant ancestry, then they added 'american' as an ethnicity, and suddenly german became the predominant ancestry, and british ancestry decreased substantially.

Usually more than that. A lot of Germans immigrants were Catholics, had a shitload of kids and overcame WASP birth rates. Then a lot of them anglicized their names so a lot of Schmitts became Smiths and basically you wouldn't be the wiser.

They still teach German as one of the language options in American schools (at least in the midwest) thanks to German influence.
There's little things that linger on still. A lot of my family's holiday traditions and recipes are German but nobody speaks German anymore and in all other regards our lifestyles are the same as WASP americans.
One thing I noticed growing up though is that families with German lineage tend to get their kids aquainted with drinking at family parties and stuff early on while the white prot families tended to be more puritanical about it.
