The problem being that the sample size is far too small to be considered accurate, especially when comparing with other samples. They compared 20 families with 20 others. The margin of error there is huge. And yes the suicide rate for gays is higher, but there are many external factors for that. I'm not saying it doesn't deserve studying, but I am saying this study is far too small scale and the study itself says it's not very accurate.

a small sample size doesn't mean the results are inaccurate, it means the results are tentative.

There isn't actually anything wrong in terms of statistical significance with having small sample sizes when the effects are so large. if you have two samples of size 20 and one sample has 30% of respondents considering suicide as an adult and the other sample has 7% of respondents considering suicide as an adult, the p value is going to be tiny that they're both drawn from the same underlying population.
If you could guarantee that the samples were drawn totally randomly then it would be done and dusted.
But in reality you usually can't draw samples totally randomly so you want to try and have larger samples.

anyway when the differences are massive like they are here you don't need large samples for it to be statistically significant that two populations are different.
