It's a highly developed industry that uses a medium (animation) that is not normally used in conjunction with complex story telling in the west. Plus it has the appeal of being foreign and therefore interesting while at the same time still accessible.

A lot of Anime is trash, but a lot of it explores szenarios which are interesting or hilarious. Take Girls und Panzer, absurd idea, would never be aired in the west. Or one punch man, which I interpret as a parody of capeshit. Or jin rho, there is nothing like that here. (Man in the High Castle explores different themes and is shitty imo)
