I'm starting a PhD and my laptop is old and unreliable, so replacing it, with pic related if possible.
Is it appropriate to use a gaymer style one or does it just scream manchild when you're doing presentations/talking to supervisor?
After the PhD when I get a job, do jobs normally provide you with your own computer for work?
If not, is a gaymer styled laptop appropriate?
I would obviously prefer a normal looking one but they are much harder to find, especially as I mainly play hard to run games like pubg. It also seems to be a lot cheaper than buying a normal laptop and a desktop before anyone suggests that.
Sorry if this is the wrong board cryptobros, couldn't really decide between g, biz and sci.
I have 2017 Omen and it locks like ass, this 2018 is completely fine by me with those thin besels.
Anthony Bell
gayming laptops are extremely unprofessional
Camden Peterson
No on will care what your laptop looks like.
My PhD scholarship paid for my laptop (which I get to keep after), though I had to pick from a small list of laptops.
Michael King
I don't care at all how it looks, just that it's "appropriate" for PhD work/jobs.
Ok thanks I was expecting this.
Hunter Morales
Thanks.
Zachary Harris
>do jobs normally provide you with your own computer for work? It depends on the job but even if they do it's likely still not your own
Julian Brown
I have a old and reliable laptop. Refurbished thinkpad t420 with a SSD Caddy and a i5 running linux mint. Cost me like 350$, can strongly advise. Only drawback is using it summer during high heat. Otherwise best purchase ever.
OP nothing screams professionality like a Macbook Pro.
If money can't buy tho, get a dell xps if you like fancy things, or a lenovo thinkpad if you're a no bullshit kind of guy.
Also, if you use the laptop a lot, consider getting a 14 inch or 15-inch screen. Trust me.
Dylan White
Depends on your age 14 - 21 it's ok, but 22 - 35 you look like a manchild
I use a ThinkPad x230, just added 8gb of ram and 512 GB SSD t. PhD student
Parker Lopez
Well what kind of answer do you expect than, if it's not about looks? If you need best components you always go with the gamig laptop. There is no third aspect besides these
Austin Nelson
I think the problem is people here are imagining some dirty laptop filled with games and an edgy desktop background. If OP gets a laptop, keeps it clean and his desktop relatively boring, it will be fine. Nobody will care if it has some LED light on the side, kind of a funny shape, a curved screen, etc. It's still just a laptop
Jayden Reed
you can get high end laptops that don't look cringe
Camden Hughes
i have an asus ux430u that plays Fallout 4, far cry 4 and much more fine. only has a i3 and a 940m. it was pretty cheap and i use it for presentations as well.
>A gaming computer is stupidly unprofessional >you can get a ultrabook that you can game on and also not look like a manchild.
Ian Jones
Dell xps 15 9560 is powerful and professional looking depending on specs. Think pads are good also
Bentley Taylor
Ive worked in a corporate place for 10 years. Please dont be that guy. Get something conservative that looks professional else you wont be taken seriously. Image and perception is everything.
>nothing screams gay retard like a Macbook Pro. Fixed
Eli Cook
>do jobs normally provide you with your own computer for work? >PhD You are getting a PhD and you are asking that question? You will not get a PhD with your single diget IQ.
This is the dumbest thread i have ever seen. Go work at Mac D.
Daniel Lewis
Gaymen laptops a shit and you should be ashamed for even considering one.
Do what this guy did. You should be able to find an x230 for like 250 dollars, and it's plenty powerful for anything you'd want to do on a laptop. Switch the keyboard out for an x220 one for the ultimate experience.
Adam Peterson
Developers will just laugh at you for even trying anything different than a Macbook Pro.
Nicholas Nguyen
Beta supersoys will laugh at you oh no!
1/10 pimple faces laughing at the laptop im using HOW CAN I LIVE ON?????
Cameron Rogers
It's fine. boomers have no clue all they see is a (laptop) not a gaming laptop or a workstation laptop. the only people that care about the difference are edgy fucks in this thread who have no input in the real business world. they will never be your boss or clients etc. buy whatever you want.
Robert Gutierrez
so very wrong. OP is right to be concerned and in fact many anons have pointed out correctly that anything other than a common looking laptop will draw attention at least. OP wants to go with a conservative looking laptop that just fits any kind of situation and be prepared for anything. >I liked the presentation and your gaming PC that's no conversation you want to be in.
Luis White
For gaming, buy a PC. As for laptops, I bought a hp spectre x360 15" and it's amazing. Not a gaming laptop, although it has the specs to play games on it.
Henry Rivera
Lol do you actually own an apple product?
Josiah Johnson
OP, I am also a PhD student and want to buy a new notebook. I like to have high specs as the notebook should replace a desktop (however I don't game)
I think the following computers are really nice:
- Dell XPS 15 with 8750H and 16 GB - The newest Gibabyte Aero - The new Ryzer Blade - Lenovo ThinkPad T480 or the upcoming P1
Dell is the most business-like looking while the Aero will give you the best gaming performance. All notebooks with high specs such as sic cores, 16 gb ram and graphics are kind of expensive somewhere between 1500 and 2500
Andrew Foster
You might as well dress like a gamer while you are at it. Gaming laptops scream unprofessionalism.
Lucas Taylor
Get a MS Surface, OP. I've got one and the advantages are unmatched by the disadvantages: 1 - You've got a full featured desktop computer in your bag at all times 2 - Hardware compatibility is almost the same as a regular desktop (adapter cables necessary, obviously) 3 - Connect to any screen or projector with DP/HDMI 4 - Expandable with various input choices: touch stylus, wireless keyboard/mouse, remote control, ...
Jack Cruz
No get a thinkpad. And if you just must get some gamer themed laptop avoid this hinge style, it is weak and will break easily from the open/close action.
Levi Jenkins
>diget
Carter Richardson
A video card can be helpful for streaming the screen through an internet connection apparently.
Luke Williams
>professional environment >anything other than a macbook pro
Charles Butler
You need to be 18 to post here

Don't buy a "gaming" laptop. The truth is you can get the most expensive ass $4,000 gayman laptop and it would barely keep up with a $600 desktop. It makes 1000x more sense to buy build a desktop and just get a cheapo laptop for a couple hundred. It doesn't have to be portable just a normal laptop, not a 15lbs gayman laptop that would suck donkey dick to lug around. At the end of the day its a slightly more portable low end desktop with a shit tier screen attached.
I have a Lenovo thinkpad t480 and installed a very lightweight Linux district on it (arch Linux / manjaro) , kept it barebones and added my own SSD.
This shit is a fucking beast and blows anyone else’s computer out of the water desu. Everything is fully optimized with hot keys so my work flow is efficient as fuck.
You make a g meme out of it but I did this myself without even knowing Jow Forums shilled thinkpads and Linux. Hmmm I wonder why? Maybe cause they’re solid and do everything perfectly.
Christopher Adams
Hi. Boomer Here. Nobody gives a fuck about your laptop. Can it throw your boring ass 20 page powerpoint up to the big screen? yes?... then nobody gives a fuck.
Samuel Taylor
Personally I wouldn't say its appropriate. If you still want gaming and performance get a dell xps or a Windows laptop with a nice 3:2 aspect ratio.
Alexander Morgan
Integrated has come a long way you would be suprised what runs on integrated graphics when you have more RAM than you need, a fast hard drive and a good processor. I bet on an i5 with 16 gigs of RAM and integrated you can play PUBG on low at a high resolution or on medium at like 1024x768.
Luis Fisher
>hp spectre x360 15" This. I'm working on a PhD too and this is perfect, both classy and good performance. People noticed it and asked for advice.
Sebastian Campbell
no one gives a shit about what your laptop looks like, also a "gaming" one will be more expensive than a quality workbook like a thinkpad
Justin Butler
Also, OP, don't listen to beta males in this thread who think you have to conform to a fucking PC standard from people who don't know anything about PCs. If you get bullied by someone into buying a particular kind of hardware, especially if you're at PhD level, you'll be forever a victim.
Tyler Cruz
It’s a professional laptop for those who don’t want a macbook. I’ve worked for co.s that use them exclusively. It’s just good. Imagine being so influenced by memes you refuse to use a product based on it’s popularity on a cantonese origami chatroom
Logan Rogers
Lol OP Nobody cares what kind of computer you use. Most boomers (your dissertation supervisor and future boss) probably don’t use one, or still use something from the late 90s. Get a $20 windows 95 laptop for the aesthetic and stop being such a basedboy millennial
Jason Bailey
get an Asus Zenbook or Thinkpad, same price, better specs
Thomas Cruz
My memepad x201 has been through my bachelor thesis and master thesis. I don't know what you mean my unreliable laptop, I guess it's just an excuse to fool yourself into buying a gayman laptop. I've changed done maintenance on my laptop and changed literally every parts at least once, with the exception of the chassis and the motherboard. If for some reason the motherboard breaks, then I'll update my laptop, but only because fixing / changing the MB would be a less practical solution. As it's going, the x201 will also go through my phd thesis, expected in 1 year.
Most people do not care what model of laptop you have, but if your machine looks like a toy spaceship with pointy angles and flashy rbg leds, it does indeed scream "manchild". A little bit like wearing cargo shorts and capeshit comics graphic t-shirts in a formal interview.
Brayden Miller
A year-old gaymen laptops are often sold at comfy prices due to their horrendous designs Also worrying if you will look like manchild at PhD "job". kek
t. PhD
Brandon Thomas
congrats on your English Literature degree
Ayden Brown
I recently bought an Acer Nitro Spin. Good specs for light gaming, under 1k. Cant flip screen and use it as a tablet. Doesnt look too much like a gaming laptop, mostly black with just a little red trim. Worth looking into imo. Got windows on 250gb ssd amd linux on 1tb hdd.
Benjamin Mitchell
man you academics are sure retarded for your level of "education"
Owen Bell
Can flip screen* fuck mobile
Ethan Stewart
I never even claimed to an academic. Do you really have nothing better to do with your life?
Michael Evans
Developers for useful things do it on windows or linux.
Brody Hernandez
This.
I learned the hard way buying laptops for the last 15 years. It seemed logical because laptops are mobile but they are just ass at everything and they are expensive. For the price of a laptop you can get a serious monster machine PC built into a mini case that you can transport around.
Owen Sanders
My GL703GS disagrees with you
dont let other peoples opinion bother you. if you like playing games, go get a gaming laptop one. do note you will have limitations with modding/upgrading so pick a high-end one if your budget allows
