In scandinavia the anwer to that question actually was to go viking. This is even shown in the style of their raids. Norse raids were rather common, but they always left the place with enough to recover. Awnsering my own question: Chrsitianity entered scandinavia by first converting the elites, and them the masses. It was a top-down kind of conversion because the Church realized that it would take too long to convert everybody.
