No, they don't need chainlink. They could achieve the same effect using a network of carrier pigeons. Just have them carry encrypted flash memory. It would have a higher bandwidth than any ethereum based oracle solution. Sharding isn't happening anytime soon. You could also use third party reputation providers to keep track of the trustworthiness of both the individual roosts and pigeons. It's the superior solution.
