I have no idea about the original comics but I've read several the original books after watched anime. It was more subtle and surreal than anime.

the books are good as well

the comics are pretty introspective and often explore philosophical themes. also the moomins do LSD in one of them and moominpappa makes moonshine with stinky in another

The comics are just as lighthearted and more comedy-oriented than the show. The subject matter is more mature

The anime is definitely more family-friendly but the books is purer and it's even scary sometimes imo

The moomins were created by a finno-swedish lesbian woman, based on some of her childhood dreams or boogeymen or some shit like that. There is basically a self-insert of the creator and her life-partner in the moomins, appearing every now and again.

The physical copies cost a load of money. Which makes no sense since they're black and white and as such should be dirt cheap to print.
