Serving in army is an experience that you can't buy with money and all those people who didn't serve will never understand this. You will learn your physical and mental limits and if you had spent most of your life inside your comfort zone, then this will force you out of that bubble. There's a good reason for why all those men who served can't stop talking about their experiences in army. 6-12 months is literally nothing, especially if you were a NEET before your service, or some burger flipper at mcdonalds

Most parents feel shame and some disappointment if their children choose not to serve without a good reason, or if they take "milk train" and quit the army in first weeks. Obviously some ultra progressive families don't mind it, but most finnish families aren't like that. Army is a test of manhood in Finland, but it doesn't necessarily mean that all men who serve become "men", but i do respect men who served a lot more than those who didn't
