It's just that for the first time American people have witnessed live and in great detail the atrocities of their government at war.
And they decided to stand up against it.
America retreated to save face. Had there been no public outcry then the slaughter would have continued until there was no fertile soil and living soul left in Vietnam, only to install a puppet government on the ashes of a people that fought to survive.

War is always a vile time. But once a war is initiated you must do everything in your power to win. Better to have people whine 7,000 miles away and 75 years later then have a boot on your neck.
