The Romans called it Gallia (or Gaul) after the Greeks, and everyone else called it some variation of France or Frankia because the Germanic tribe of the Franks conquered it after the Roman Empire fell, and created the Frankish Empire, and when that fell apart in the 840s the region that roughly encompasses France was known as West Frankia/Francia.
