The word has no real literal meaning anymore when it's used in the context of left wing vs. right wing. If you identify as a liberal in America in 2018 there's a good chance you are actually an anti-free speech fascist.

The “liberal” term refers to being liberal with restrictions on government intervention. Conservatives traditionally wanted less government intervention and to have things handled mostly at state level and private sector.

The Republicans were never "left wing" by modern standards.
Republicans weren't socialist, they were simply further left economically than democrats. Democrats then went even further left than the republicans were while the republican position didn't really move for a while though its gravitated further right since just out of a lack of other places for right-wing people to go.
