The sad thing is that most mexicans have little to do with the aztecs because they were mostly genocided, in my opinion they should have banned the spanish language and expelled every single criollo as they did with many spaniards so they could have a real identity. Most Mexicans are nothing like that, if anything, it is leftist movements in USA aimed at causing anti-american sentiment that have helped shaped the aztec-loving chicano figure.
Most of that movement is dying out however, as the individuality of the chicano culture is no longer sufficient for the leftist movement, and most kids and college students are more into the pan-leftist side of things than in the self ideolizing side of things, however for racial reasons, to bring up the european invasion still serves the "anti-white" effort, so it has its uses.
