The Japanese as previously stated are short because of Jomon ancestry. Koreans are taller, especially North Koreans though their growth has been stunted by famine. The tallest Asians are in northernmost China, that is Manchuria and the Shandong peninsula.

Yeah and the Han Chinese that live in the Northeast or Manchuria are primarily descended from Han from Shandong. There is something about that province that generates tall people. I think Confucius who also from Shandong was recorded to be 1.8m tall despite coming from an impoverished background in ancient China where people had to eat rocks to survive.

Serious answer would be ecogeographic rules. You have to evolve in a cold place to be bigger but not too cold because then that would cause your limbs to become shorter.

Supposedly your limbs would be proportionally longer if you live in a more humid environment so Southeast Asians have longer limbs. The Japanese are a weird outlier as they have much short limbs than other group in Northeast Asia due to genetic factors.

They are shorter because of their smaller statutes and they wouldn't seem tall because it is all proportional. The issue of shorter limbs is more noticeable with the Japanese, however.
