I was deployed to Western Africa with the military, and we're pretty much fighting a culture war over there.
Everyone wants the cheap labor and resources that these countries provide, the French, Chinese and Americans all say they want different things but it's all just a show.

I spoke very broken French, so I did a lot of work with the locals. One day I asked an older guy what he thought of all this. He kind of shrugged his head and said "at least Americans are honest about what there here to do."

It was pretty sketchy when I first got there, right around the time a bunch of American special forces got killed. People didn't trust us I guess. I drove supply convoys to base and one time a little kid stepped out in front of my truck with a machete to try and get us to stop so they could steal the food we had. I was driving the lead truck and was about to run him over before he jumped out of the way. It fucked me up for a long time.
But once the locals knew that we were there to help them, everything was chill. They were all great people, really cool to be around. It was the Islamists from countries like Nigeria and Mali that came in and caused trouble for everyone.
