When I say socially, I mean in terms of social policy -- "right" and "left" would be about "traditional" versus "progressive" values, I guess. Like I said, the entire dichotomy is very arbitrary and I really prefer discussing actual policies rather than these abstract terms (not that there's anything wrong with abstractions, but these add nothing to the discussion).

No they aren't, though. Historically the left right dichotomy had to do with whether you were opposed to or in support of certain hierarchies in society. National socialism supported a strong hierarchy between people in society. Conversely Marxist socialism was seen as a stepping stone to communism where there would be no hierarchy. Thus, national socialism is right wing but Marxist socialism is left wing.

But, like I said, that's a very arbitrary dichotomy that isn't even used in actual reputable historical works.
Many Europeans are much better off than the average American and they still build decent public transportation (see cities like Munich, Zurich, Geneva, Stockholm, Amsterdam etc).

Not to mention that a decent system of public transportation helps you avoid Los Angeles tier traffic congestion.

Additionally s*burbs became dominant because the government spent billions/year building car-dependent infrastructure. And the unique thing about cars is that car infrastructure comes at the cost of every other kind of transportation. When you build for cars it gets too sparse to run transit or walk or bike, and it’s the most expensive form of transport, for the consumer and the government. It’s also the most dangerous and fuel-inefficient. Do you know how much they have to subsidize oil companies to make gas affordable? So when cars became the dominant infrastructure choice they remained, because people had no other choice.

This costs the taxpayer enormously as a constant stream of freeways must be built to keep pace with the automotive demand, it costs the consumers in how much they have to spend on their car that they're DEPENDENT ON, it costs society with a steady rate of suburban sprawl and pollution and waste of a finite resource.

At least populism has the virtue of a political activity attached to it.
