i dunno if you are into any faith or mysticism but you should check out gnosticism.
the nutshell is that this earth was an experiment of sorts by aeons (think gods of the gods) and the 'god' that rules it sorta came out retarded due to certain conditions which don't need to be described here.
anyway this 'god' (jehovah, yahweh, yaldaboath) doesn't even know there are other gods above him because his creator hid him in shame of the flawed experiment. jehovah then takes this world as his domain and seeks to dominate and subjugate humans who live on it. (thou shalt have no other gods before me, etc)
humans however have souls who incarnate into the bodies and have a connection to the higher spiritual realm that yaldaboath does not have. so we always have this sense that something is wrong or missing or flawed in the world, and he's always clamping down on true faith and gnosis (personal spiritual knowing and direct experience) and instead funnels the seekers into earthly control religions (islam, catholicism, judaism, most mainstream religions actually)
the gnostics were all wiped out by the early orthodox christian church and the only way we learned about it is from a bunch of scrolls hidden in a buried jar for centuries (the nag hammadi library) as well as christian critics who try debunking gnosticism in their time.
