Western society... is built around worship of the blacks. Despite not making up more than 10-15% of the population of most countries, all the focus of modern art, music, culture, media, politics and advertising is on them. They are on TV screens and billboards everywhere.

It's kinda dumb but I feel that picture is probably one of those cases where people look darker or lighter depending on the lighting. Osaka's picture has her facing away from the light source in the picture, whereas the anime version has a brighter light source.

Other than that, Japan is generally just kind of sheltered and kinda ignorant. Living in a homogeneous society affects how your perception of others foreign to your bubble.

The Naomi Osaka thing is really annoying for Japan because it attracts this degree of attention form foreign press who have superficial and basically racist ideas about the country but they all think they're experts.

It ends up creating this viscous cycle where all the culture writers source the same english-language articles for a round of articles about some trending thing, and then later articles cite the their articles, and so on. In the end you get a ridiculous caricature that is backed up with dozens of "credible" outlets going back months.

I mean like, you live in this society where basically everyone's pretty similar in appearance, culture and language, right? And suddenly you're thrust into the global scene, and there's so many people who are just incredibly different to you.
