When did you start using Kanji + Kana in the way you do today? Historically the uses were for notating pronunciation and meaning of Kanji, and writing when you don't know Kanji.
Anyway that's actually sad la, I like English spelling because it has history embedded in it, also it's useful for homophones but I suppose Kanji fixes that for you.
