A Jewish doctor named Abraham Wolbarst invented the concept of circumcision preventing penile cancer and STDs in the early 1900s and people still believe that to this day.

It is changing but it's moving at a glacial pace because the anti-circumcision is almost entirely a grassroots effort that is smeared at every given opportunity by the mainstream media. You might not be aware of this but every other Anglo territory used to practice circumcision as well. England, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand all once mutilated the majority of their men but no longer, and the reason for that happening in each of these countries had nothing to do with a mass awakening of Joe Average but because the medical communities in each country had figures within them that recognized that this practice was unethical and as such enacted change which ended universal healthcare coverage for circumcision, forcing parents to pay out of pocket for it.

Nobody knows the real origins of it, but it's interesting to note that the original Jewish circumcision, the bris milah, only took the very end of the foreskin which extended past the glans. When some Jewish men were tying off what was left of their foreskins to completely cover their glans so that they would appear like Greeks, rabbinical authorities decided to institute a more radical form of circumcision that removed every last trace of foreskin and destroyed as much of the penis as possible.
This is now the form of circumcision practiced in US medicine that American doctors claim has absolutely no effect on sexual pleasure whatsoever.

No, man, I'm actually not going far enough. They don't know ANYTHING about the foreskin other than how to cut it off, they don't even know how it develops. For instance: the foreskin is fused to the head of the penis in infancy and studies have been done that have shown that this fusion doesn't dissolve away until around the age of 10. American doctors are very dogmatic and closed off to anything that wasn't explicitly taught to them in medical school, and American medical invariably teaches that men are born with defective penises that need to be surgically corrected at birth and that the foreskin has absolutely no function whatsoever. Also, only 40% of infant circumcisions are done with anesthesia, and even then the most you can safely give an infant is local anesthesia which requires multiple injections directly into the base of the penis and takes several minutes to take effect so there's no guarantee that even if a doctor is actually using anesthesia that he will wait long enough for it to work.
The majority of doctors who perform circumcisions give baby boys a sugar water solution for the pain. I'm dead fucking serious, too, and some subhuman parents out there actually believe that this works.

Thing is, phimosis is natural to a certain extent. The foreskin is fused to the head of the penis from infancy until about age 10, sometimes for even longer. If the foreskin is messed with during this time and the membrane fusing it to the head of the penis is damaged, this can cause problems later in life like pathological phimosis. However, as you say, even then it can usually be sorted out by stretching the foreskin regularly. There's a blog run by a guy who had the worst case of phimosis imaginable where he basically had a pinhole opening and it was completely impossible for him to retract his foreskin, and after regularly stretching it he was able to cure himself of his phimosis.
