From Thomas Hobbes to Hans-Hermann Hoppe and beyond, it asks: How can the sovereign power be prevented – or at least dissuaded — from devouring society? It consistently finds democratic ‘solutions’ to this problem risible, at best.

I'm not quite sure desu. I think a lot of it comes from a worship of anglo culture, which led to importing American ideas about race despite the fact that they have zero relevance to our country. We also have a tendency to think that we are the most normal and the most developed country in the world, and that all other countries dream of becoming like Sweden. This was especially obvious in the debates leading up to the EU election.
There's some kind of saviour ideal imprinted into Swedish culture that's been around for the last few decades, I reckon it comes from guilt at the fate we avoided during WW2 - Norway got annexed, Denmark got annexed, and we didn't (openly) help Finland fight off the Soviets. We came out virtually unscathed, but we needed some narrative to prove to ourselves that "we were with the good guys" during WW2. How do you do that when you didn't really do anything. Well, you point to the one thing we did do: save Jewish refugees. The idea became that "Sweden's a good country and deserves its wealth because we were a humanitarian superpower". Now with the refugee crisis, going against what our country's morality is derived from (refugees) would crumble our self-identity.

Probably doesn't explain all of it, but I think it plays a pretty big part. The phrase "we are and always have been a humanitarian superpower" comes up again and again in political debates, I'd say its a pretty big part of our national identity.

I think an even bigger part is that most Swedes simply don't feel that they have a national identity. We just see ourselves as "normal", which obviously every country does to some extent, but it's to the point where Swedes are completely oblivious to anything that separates our culture from others. In my Swedish classes I remember being told "sure fika (a specific mealtime we have) and kanelbullar (a pastry) are swedish, but what about Bahar whose parents came from Iran, is she not a part of Swedish culture too. How can fika and kanelbullar be quintessentially Swedish if a Swede (Bahar) is also Swedish yet it's not a part of her identity?"

I don't really know what it is, but I do think it comes from a need to disassociate ourselves from our past during the WW2 years. Swedes are uncomfortable with the fact that we haven't always been the bastion of democracy, liberalism, and all of that which we see ourselves representing, so we overcompensate.
