Croatia was loyal to the crown to which it pledged directly while its institutions were a part of Hungary at the same time (it's complicated). There's no way in hell Croats would go with Hungary. So, there's your answer. Lots of bloodbath would happen.

The first Yugoslavia larped a Byzantine successor. Literally.

It was the reason for its downfall. Serbs were like rabid dogs who fought against the rights of any Catholic. Their church was excommunicating Belgrade politicians who were willing to give equal rights to the Catholic church all the while king was circlejerked by imperial Russian refugees to treat everyone like in the absolutist Romanov country which culminated in the dissolution of the parliament.
This fueled the Ustaša movement which Italy was glad to support because they still thought they could get Dalmatia for themselves if Yugoslavia was weakened. In the end Austria-Hungary outlived Yugoslavia by a lot.

There's a big difference between the Byzantine and western European civilization. The difference goes all the way to the metaphysical understanding of the universe. Yes, of course. Churches at that times administered schools, ran hospitals etc. Yugoslavia took away most powers of the church to continue running local communities, as Catholicism wasn't considered an official state religion in the same capacity as the orthodox faith. This lead to many problems in local management. The bill which was supposed to restore the rights of the church to govern was presented, but the politicians who voted to pass it were excommunicated by the Serbian Orthodox church and amidst all the pressure it failed.
This is the blueprint of how Yugoslavia was ran. By Serbs fucking up everyone else. And when they couldn't, they resorted to assassinations in the midst of the parliament with murderers being sentenced to life in imprisonment (in villas gifted by the Yugoslav king).

A pipe dream. The political culture we have is completely republican and "muh commie boogeyman". Within this framework there is no nation building. Unironically the only way forward is for Croatian royal societies to step it up and counter the republican and balkan narrative. It takes generations to swap the politicians, but it takes one king to steer the country in another direction even with current politicians. Unironically restore monarchy, it's the only way to steer the ship in the right direction.

I wouldn't ever dream of conjoining countries across the Balkans, no, we have too much history together for that. What I was suggesting was a sort of economical pact, although a "union" would better fit to describe it. Also, even if we were to restore the Monarchy, which wouldn't even be that bad of an idea, who would be the Monarch? The Habsburgs are mostly done for, they hold no social or political power. Would this suggest choosing an entirely new ruling dynasty, or a Habsburg restoration or resurrection in this case.

I don't dream of restoring the monarchy to all of our countries. Monarchism will gain significant influence again in the coming decades because European monarchists, especially in Poland are getting organized. Polish monarchists have their own university ffs. We're lagging behind them.

In any case, if someone were to restore the monarchy, it'll probably be Poland (very strong movement), Hungary or Croatia. Regarding our countries, we could pass it off as a Habsburg restoration. I'm not sure how much Hungarians want Habsburgs back, but among Croatian monarchists the backing for Habsburgs are over 90%. If that were to happen, you'd have Habsburg Croatia. Not quite Austria-Hungary and not sure how much it would mean to you, but for us, the crown of Zvonimir (no longer joined with the crown of Stephen) would be restored along with its legitimate holder.

You're mistaken in thinking Habsburgs don't have much power. They're very involved in European politics and are basically the leaders of Pan-European movement. They're still well respected and wealthy. If you move in high society, you'll always find them around. Some Croatian boomers have in the last few years started larping with Habsburgs, joining their Knightly Order of St. George and calling them back into the country. Habsburgs do similar things in Czechia and Hungary with somewhat less action in Austria (where they're forbidden to do things) and Slovakia (which only recently got a royalist society).

In any case, whoever restores Habsburgs, that country will certainly get a bunch of royalist migrants and that country will certainly become a leader of a new Miteleuropa initiative.
