Jokes aside a lot of the soil found offroad is pretty much untouched and we'd like to keep it that way, not only because it might contain delicate plant life (tourists have done a great job of genociding Icelandic moss by offroading) but also because things already have a hard enough time growing here without people ripping up saplings and the like

It varies between plants but with the more delicate mosses you can cause potentially irreparable damage with offroading or just a lot of walking (like that one spot Justin Bieber used in some music video, pic related)

Thing is that things have a really hard time growing here; about 60% or more of the country is desert and you have to carpet bomb some places with pioneer species if you want to ever have a chance of growing anything there, so even just the act of offroading on some soil could rip up saplings that would otherwise have paved the way to a greener Iceland

Just take the bus and walk, camping is nice and for a service fee you can use the showers in the mountain huts. if you're smart, you hike to some secluded highland hot springs (No, not Landmannalauger!) an enjoy magic views sitting in a natural hot pool and drinking beer.

I've been to iceland and they dont really tell you how you're not supposed to drive offroad, some car rental places even advertise 4x4s for you to do that very same thing. The fact that there are only particular palces than you can offroad on and there's like 0 information about it unless you actively look for it is dumb
