My interest was peaked watching WSOP when I was 16, from there I dicked around online and lost a bunch of money using prepaid cards. Then eventually I started studying, Sklanskys " The Theory of Poker " is a really good start and you can find the PDF online for free.

Learn the rules/basics playing with play money on stars. Once you understand the rules you can read Sklansky book. REALLY understand the concepts of EV, equity, implied odds and most critically AFTER you have learned all of that ranges. Range and an understanding of EV in a mathematical sense is what separates casuals from profitable players.

I think there are a few out there that are considered cornerstones, but I can only recommend Sklanskys book as its the only one I have read on the topic. The majority of the hard work is learning the math, really drill it until the numbers become second nature. After that you can work on strategy, which will be changing based on every table you play at anyways, don't fall for the GTO meme, it's impossible to play GTO and at the stakes you will be playing at when making money, being 1/2 ( high volume ), 2/5 and above ( more realistic for living off it ) you'll be better off shooting for exploitative play rather than GTO.

Also if you can beat 0.10/0.25 on stars consistently you can beat 95% of 1/2-2/5 casino games out there. Live play is much softer than online. Too many Eastern Euro grinders online.
