They could ditch characters for pinyin or bopomofo but they won't because of traditions.

Japanese is the language that cannot ditch Chinese characters.

There's no need, now that digital paper is universal. Eliminating characters would also complicate communication between Chinese people who speak different dialects which is very undesirable.

They are actually not very difficult to learn once you develop a good grasp of the fundamentals. Unlike in Japanese, characters have the same sound 99% of the time, and somehow you find that just seeing a character a few times in different contexts will learn it. It's a language, and it works well with the brain for one reason or another.
