Yeah I was just googling it trying to figure it out, and it looks like China has made a lot of effort investing in itself, and apparently the Chinese government offer lucrative grants for educated Chinese people who come back to China to work or start businesses. This means educated Chinese people, who might study in the West, can then earn more back in China, thanks to these grants. India doesn't offer these grants, so educated Indians move to western countries instead, like the US, where they can earn more.

Simplistic meme responses don't really explain much. China has had a rural, poor population for many of the past few decades as well, and yet they've managed to grow their economy and advance themselves more than India has. Of course parts of India's economy and society are quite advanced, but their economy is certainly nowhere near as big as China's, in dollar value.

You reckon? America has always been a democracy and they managed to develop. I think strong leadership and government is needed, sure, but not necessarily dictatorship.

i think a lot of it is actually due to the different cultures of india and how fractured they are. There is a lot of racism within india, look how southern indians (completely different people almost) are treated.

If you're as far behind as India was after British rule you really do need a dictatorship to catch up. Democracy is fine when you were in the club from the beginning. But otherwise you need to either isolate your economy or heavily subsidize yourself, because all the sweet spots are already taken.

Chinas ability to mobilise its population is simply much larger. The country has a history of national unficiation and identity, which means even the ethnic minorities are easily mobilised alongside the Han majority.

Not so in India. Its a country that has no history of such national unity and its extremly difficult to mobilise all these disparate ethnicties and religions, especially due to linguistic and cultural differences.

My point was that economic growth follows the mean age in any country. This is why western countries like the UK, France, Canada, etc. have a slower growth now with a mean age of 40 y/o than they did in the 1970s when the boomers were the core of the working force at 25 years old.

In China, they had a massive growth because the mean age in 2000 was of around 30 years old, India had a mean age of around 20 years old. Those below 20 years old are a net expenditure in a country, they dont bring anything yet cost money, while China was having a thriving work force and industrializing, Indians had a younger population and thus not as much of a large work force.
