The foundation of Ghaznavid state was already laid when Alptigin rebelled against Abu Salih Mansur, marched to Ghazna and defeated Abu Bakr Levik in 12 January 963.

Sabuktigin just dethroned Alptigin's heir, Böri Tegin and started the Ghaznavid dynasty as we know today in 977. After that he was kind of "independent" for a moment, or semi-independent, then later he pledge allegiance to Nuh II and fought against the Faiq rebellion. Then Sebüktigin died and Khwarezmians took over Samanid lands and the Samanid Empire collapsed and Mahmud shined.
