It's easy to say, but access to gold and general investment vehicles is under-developed in third-world countries. What ends up happening, you CAN buy gold with a 20% premium, but that doesn't feel good, even though it makes economical sense - you subconsciously don't want to feed bankers with those crazy fees. Yes, it's easy to say after the fact that those 20% would leave you with more money in the end, but really hard to swallow in the moment.
