Every literal system that interacts with another system uses metric. There are tool standards and physical gauges of pipe etc. that has an imperial standard, but metric is still THE standard. Problems with it have largely only occurred when Americans or Britbongs can't into conversion.

He’s right though, the system fundamentally lacks a measurement of length for approximately a foot. That’s like, the prime measure distance for humans, where the vast majority of our discussion about length takes place. If there was a bell curve, it would spike around “1 foot”.

You use inches when you break up a foot. There’s something like 8 in a foot. The exact amount doesn’t matter, you use metric when it matters. I also think inches are more intuitive for humans than cm, and that’s why it naturally evolved that way in our language.

Also, 0.5m doesn’t really flow from the tongue or does anyone actually use it. You want “1 unit” to be around such an important length to the human experience, not an approximate decimal.

See it's because the USA has no culture. In Europe almsot every town had different measurement units. Too many time traders were cheated and too much time was taken to convert units. So a unifed system of measurements was neccessary. Meanwhile the USA was so cultureless that you never developed your own system, just copied a late British system.

If you want to call this naturalistic fallacy then go ahead but I believe the most optimal system for humans is one which best fits our evolutionary Make-up. The perfect example is language.

I will always believe 5’10 is a better indication of height than 1.87 metres or whatever. You could make the same argument you’re making if a metre was twice as long as it currently is, or ten times as long, “just use one twentieth of a metre.” But we both know that’s silly, we need a measure of length that is approximately the size of our hand, for the same reason we use base-10 because of fingers on our hands.

The real problem with imperial system, that I know that a foot is like 30 cm, but I can't visualize a foot. Like I can imagine something that is 60 cm long, but imaginign somethign that is 2 foot long is really hard.
