They are, and 0xBTC is a bet on Ethereum surviving, no doubt about it. However ETHER is a utility coin, and not meant as a currency or store of value. It's inflationary, was ICO'd (so uneven distribution with developers able to dump at any time), still has no defined monetary policy, and will eventually shift to proof-of-stake, with yet undetermined effects. Vitalik himself said Ether might as well be worth something in the double-digits -- the network would run just fine. It's a utility first and foremost, and its future is completely up in the air.
0xBTC is the first minable token. It's deflationary and hard-capped at 21 million, like BTC. It's distributed from a smart contract which is locked, immutable, and transparent -- audit the code any time you'd like. There was no pre-mine or ICO, which ensures those who have accumulated have paid their dues, and secures fair distribution. Unlike Bitcoin, it interacts with all Ethereum smart contracts. Unlike Ether, it's a store-of-value, and is even easier to use in smart contracts too (no wrapping).
It intends to be the SOV and currency of the Ethereum network. When Lavawallet is finished, you will even be able to use a relay system that allows you to pay the Ether gas price in any token you choose, so you won't have to hold Ether if you don't want to.
