the new world is different, because sadly the natives and their culture have been almost entirely wiped out. my country may be full of immigrants, but they were good immigrants that assimilated and integrated, and their descendants are indistinguishable from the majority of uruguayans besides maybe their (well, our) surnames.

story time: my grandparents by dad's side were polish. they learned spanish and tried to adapt to local culture the best they could. they were always seen as foreigners, but people were welcoming of them and nice to them because they truly made an effort to fit in and becoming uruguayan, instead of staying in a ghetto screeching in polish all day and whining to the government for gibs. they didn't came here and get free shit, they came here and had to work for their home, their food and their clothes just like every uruguayan. while they were never truly seen as uruguayan due to their country of origin (and thick accent in grandpa's case), they were accepted in every other way, and their kids were considered uruguayan despite both of their parents being polish.
it has to do with both the local people's mentality and the immigrant's desire to become one of the locals. if they truly put effort into being good, law abiding hard working citizens, they will be accepted eventually.
