I have a spouse visa, not a working visa. I'm currently working for an old woman who owns many guests houses around Tokyo.
If you just want to live in Japan for a year, get a working holiday visa, it will be way easier that trying to find a company willing to sponsor you for a working visa. Besides you will be free to do whatever you want. Each visa has its limitations.
Citizenship > permanent residence > spouse visa > working holiday visa (just for one year) > working visa > student visa

I'm married to a japanese citizen, we were able to prove that our relationship is real and some other things so I was granted a spouse visa.
There are many, many job opportunities. English teachers are a small, yet very loud, minority and most of them earn a minimum salary. You can make the same working (or more if you are lucky) on a supermarket, restaurant or guest house.
