American woman moves to Finland - gets diagnosed with cancer

hs.fi/kaupunki/helsinki/art-2000006137023.html

Danna Nelson, a native American moved to Finland 4 years ago. Then suddenly after 3 years living in Helsinki she has cancer.

In the Helsinki hospital it became apparent that nurses dont necessarily speak good English.

Eventually Danna tried to speak Finnish a little.

Right now there is 200 000 people in Helsinki region whose mother tongue is not Finnish.

>Finland has no official requirement for English language skills at hospitals. All nurses are required to speak good Finnish and basic Swedish.

The situation is tried to be improved so that there would be at least someone able to speak English in all hospital sections.

Imagine if she was still in America when she had a cancer. She probably saved a million dollar by moving to Finland.

Yeah in Finland the treatments are affordable, of course it will eat much of her probably low income but compared to millionms of dollars in America, thats nothing

>lives there for 3 years
>still can't speak the language
rude

this.

How is this remarkable? People get cancer all the time.

Depends on her insurance. My insurance has a out of pocket maximum of 2000.

>be me
>get sick in finland
>nurse can't speak english
>only speaks basic swedish words because mongols are unteachable at pakkoruotsi classes
>tells me "jo jättbra svenska" and "pök"
>die
well done finland well done

idk why Americans do this. They fall into a boring routine as an expat and only hangout w other expats and bars that can help them in English.

This is a thread about the lack of translator services for English in the hospitals of Finland

you'll need more than 3 years to learn finnish for the following reasons
1. finns are anti social and don't say much so you cant practice finnish in public
2. finnish language is fucked beyond measure

they're better off learning swedish.

>be european
>can't speak at least A2 english

Stop pretending that your health insurance system is in any way fair. They try to cuck you in any way they can.

This article makes me envy Finland, here in Cuckxico when an american gets sick and go to the hospital, there's atleast one nurse to translate to the amerifat, the worst part is there are hospitals where americans are a majority.
When I got sick and went to what is considered the best hospital in my state I realized all the patients were foreigneirs, I felt like a damn immigrant in my own country, one nurse even told me.
>Hey user, seeing a mexican here is pretty rare, where do you work?
My patriotic sentiment went to the roof and I really felt bad for my countrymen.
It's good to know there are countries that still refuse to bend to the eternal ameripig.

Fuck off ahmed. Most would gladly small talk in finnish with a foreigner who's trying to learn the language

>this is what Pikko-Pakko Paskalainen thinks
Speak Swedish, you mong(ol)

Nurses don't speak english here either.
It's actually Germany here if people forget it.

>Speak Swedish, you mong(ol)

Why did the family bull let this "man" out of his cuckshed?

yeah, but all doctors do, it's basically impossible to practice medicine without knowing english. why didn't they talk to her if nurses weren't able to?

>but all doctors do
Maybe in Poland.
You will have a hard time to find a German doctor that actually knows english.

German doctors are not actually tended to cure people.

hahaha
based desu
git fuckd anglos

how the fuck do they keep up with literature then? how do they go on conferences? any doctor I know says it's necessary to speak english to practice, and you can't even graduate unless you pass an exam that confirms you have a C1 level

I thought medical doctor needs to know latin and not english?

>"Let me lecture you about your own country".

>and basic Swedish

KEKED

Why should people be forced to speak english? I don't go abroad and complain that people don't speak french.

>Eventually Danna tried to speak Finnish a little.
Why not start trying to master at least basic words and sentences BEFORE moving to another country? Murrikans are really weird.

>A2
>C1
What are these levels?

You need B2 level english to pass Abitur to study medicine here. Then you study medicine and work as a interim, later as a doctor and later when you have 20+ years experience you settle in your own Praxis. Guess what, in all of this time you don't need english anymore and you didn't use it anymore either.

We have rich German literature ourselves. Well in polish propably not. Besides that important stuff is translated.

she doesn't look native american

It's easy and most people understand it.
Lingua Franca
Like it or not it's useful.

>Right now there is 200 000 people in Helsinki region whose mother tongue is not Finnish.
That's 1 too many, deport them all

you learn latin as well, but thats more of a traditational thing, not something useful. the only thing you get from that is that most of medical nomenclature is based on latin. you have 4 semesters of english with special attention to medical vocabulary and another course that teaches you how to corretly search for and interpret clinical trials and scientific articles in online databases, which are of course published in english, no matter from which country they come from.

of course we have Polish medical literature, but until something makes it from scientific articles to well established knowledge that gets put in textbooks, year pass

many years pass*
also lots of stuff never gets translated anyways, like clinical trials for example

there's a russian guy doing videos on youtube who learnt finnish in just 1 year living here, and a japanese guy living in japan who learnt it in less than 3 years
no excuses
people generally are lazy bastards who like to whinge, and we don't need any more of those in here

>"Herr Doktor Hans, zer iz ze conference in New York or London or Tokyo where many important figures of your field will present newest discoveries and cutting edge treatment methods, are you intersted?"
>"Nein, I don't give ze sheise, I have those 20 years old textbooks, I don't need to learn anything new"

Go home.

How the hell would she apart from shitty duolingo, nobody will just speak with her to practice it’s finland

Where?

He's right in my opinion. Since your new government has the Swedish people's party in it and are reintroducing more strict Swedish learning rules it might be easier for a foreigner to learn Swedish instead of Finnish when moving to Finland.

A1=retard
A2=retard

B2=confident retard
C1=averge
C2=can speak the language properly

>a native American
uhh

Wypipo b like "I'm 1/64 native American so I might as well be like uh, a representative of the Native plight amirite boys"
Why do they do this? I've never met real people (non-Americans) who vocally obsess about their 1/16 Irish or 1/8 Italian heritage. It reeks of insecurity.

Isn't this the case everywhere? I had to spend some time in hospital in Poland and all the doctors spoke English well but not one nurse knew more than a few words. I didn't mind as it meant that I was able to practice Polish more.

I see the same with Scandinavian IT workers moving to Tallinn and other places.
So they don't watch any news of TV programs
Don't socialize with Estonians.
Some might attend language courses
But generally they live segregated from rest of the society, which is fine because they interact with a lot that is usually targetting tourists. But its still segregation.

at the hospital I worked at, I had to translate sometimes for patients who couldn't speak any available on-site translator's language, and if nobody could, then we had wheelable carts with microphones that we would bring to them, and use in a conference call with an online translator for their language. Maybe this system might work for finland too, since you guys also have low population density.

She never claimed to be Native American
It's Finns being autistic with their use of language

Rent free, seethe, yikes etc.

>how the fuck do they keep up with literature then?
National organizations aiming to translate that and then redistribute it
> how do they go on conferences?
Generally a waste of time unless you have a cadre of people along to distill new technology into manuals, so you can redistribute
>any doctor I know says it's necessary to speak english to practice
Its necessary because post Soviet means no good way of sharing field updates survived. And Poland like a lot of post Soviet blocks ended up with settling for importing American literature.
Its generally the same in Norway, and quite a few other countries.
Germany is different because all they do can also be used in the other German speaking countries, and imported back the other way. They have essentially built logistics to get around the issue, so its not a problem for them.

it's the Westerner's arrogance. same shit happens in Poland. some time ago while out drinking with the lads a met a Dutch guy. we were talking in English, I assumed he was a tourist and asked how he enjoys the city. he replied he lived here for 3 years now because corporation he works for sent him to their Polish branch and that it's cool. I asked him if he found Polish difficult to learn. he looked at me like I was an alien and said he though it was too hard so didn't bothered learning.

And sharing your wife and sucking black dick is swedish national hobby. In my opinion of course

>japanese guy
If you're talking about the youtuber Gen, I think his vocabulary is still pretty limited and pronunciation kind of janky

he have lots of Polish medical literature written by Polish authors. but the newest advancemets are not immeditately translated, it takes years between two editions of a textbook and the science greatly advances in the meantime, thats why everyone relies on publications to stay current. conferences are important for those on top of the field, even for networking and establishing cooperative projects. shit like case studies or clinical trials for a specific drug does not get translated. you publish your own articles in english. I could go on.

>it's the Westerner's arrogance.
Thats a lot of words to avoid discussing the actual issue.
The global economy and global communication allows for people to move somewhere in large enough numbers, to stay segregated in a way that wasn't possible before.
So you don't need language to do grosseries, or shop at a hardware store.
If you rent, you don't need to do hardware upgrades, maybe even not doing maintenance.
Corporations(plural) hires in such numbers you can network inside those companies, and have a lot of people to interact with in your spare time.

Foreign carpenters do the same thing in Norway. And its hilarious. Usually a foreman ends up learning weaksauce Norwegian to a reasonable level, and then expands the enterprise because its possible to interact with costumers now.

>shit like case studies or clinical trials for a specific drug does not get translated.
Thats the joke. The Germans have a system to do that.

It's hilarious how this works out. Mexicans in the US use our hospitals here the same way. Such is life in the globalized world.

if anything the case with literute is the opposite, when Iron Curtain existed it was very hard to import texbooks and magazines from the west, so we created our own lines of textbook which are still used to this time. my old anatomy textbook was like 20-something-th edition, no one uses shit like Gray to a bigger extent even though it's now availible and translated

Underrated

maybe, but I don't think it's possible to have everything translated, the current output is insane.

She can probably get a translator. lot of American hospitals have this service.

Do European hospitals not have translators? Big Yikes if so
