The amount of money Australia just disappear out of the country during the mining boom is absolutely mindboggling, literally trillions of dollars through atrocious trade deals and lack of taxing on the industry. In the end Australia sold something like 600 billion dollars worth of natural gas for 90 million dollars, then Australians had to pay for that gas to be reimported into Australia to be used here.
Australia came out of the Mining Boom, the largest resource boom in history with a 90 billion dollar structural deficit and no major infrastructure spending since the 50s. We're a special sort. (in comparison, the Norway resource boom which pales in comparison to Australia's led to a trillion dollar surplus).
Also Australia is just a boring as fuck nanny state.
