The New Order. I thought that was a solid game in all aspects. The New Colossus got too wrapped up in its own sense of self-importance and decided that it had "something to say". Now, social commentary is fine if executed well, but when your gameplay doesn't evolve and your plot is weak, your failure in execution will be all the more obvious.

Well I don't think they have to get "preachy" to be ugly and "offensive" in an aesthetic sense. They went for the "inglorious basterds" "exploitation" vibe, which I can understand even if I dislike that. I just think it's not enjoyable in a video game.
Hitman Absolution went for an exploitation film vibe too, but it wasn't as degraded or revelling in ugliness. You got a happy ending too.

Not just the visuals (some are pretty good), more like the "vibe" and worldview behind it. It was apparent in the first one to me probably similar to what you found "preachy" about the second one.

I didn't like it much at first because I thought the levels were way too constrained at times (they are, but they aren't terribly designed), and I didn't really like the story or the exploitation vibe, but in hindsight I enjoyed replaying it because I went back and played earlier Hitmans (Hitmen?) since Absolution was my first in the series, and also because despite the exploitation vibe it's more or less just a classically heroic story, which are the type I like more.

That's a good point. It had more constrained gameplay than previous games because it wanted to tell a tighter story. Personally I'm prepared to accept that trade-off. Now granted, the story wasn't great. But I'm not a fan of this trend in recent years towards games that have a very loose story in order to afford the player more "freedom".
