I just bought my first bitcoin and don't understand why the biggest btc miner is dumping it for what everyone is calling a scam

because an attack on bitcoin at that scale would cause a pretty immediate proof of work change, just as a compromise in sha256 would.

because it's a last resort measure to try to keep the price propped up, against the natural course of the market

because he's overexposed himself to a coin with dwindling interest and liquidity, drank his own koolaid, etc. he's forced to buy his own currency to prevent what he already owns further declining in value, which in turn causes more uncertaincy in it as they become a larger and larger holder.

all the while it's following the same pattern every fork does, of declining volume and interest as time goes on. forks generally have a much shorter window to prove themselves than original coins.

Roger Ver has done more for the adoption of Bitcoin than most others.

Back in ~2011 no businesses accepted Bitcoin so he made one to a) make Bitcoin and b) show people it could be used as money.

Roger is still doing the same thing - using Bitcoin as money which BCH is doing and BTC has abandoned. This is a trend among most early-Bitcoin adopters.

My grandmother would just think Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash are names for the same thing. If I always said Bitcoin Cash, she would never guess that Bitcoin Cash is actually a minority endeavour. Bitcoin Gold, on the other hand, sounds distinct from Bitcoin, more like an addon (still scam-ish, of course).
