We do make friends with foreigners but not just for the sake of it. Find a common hobby. Its easier to make friends with other foreigners for you no matter from where because you have similar circumstances. That holds true in any country. Was the same for me in japan. Honestly it's not that bad. It depends a little on where you're going, but you honestly should do fine unless you're a total textbook sperg. Just try to work on your German as much as you can and talk to people. If you can't find anybody, pretend to be into football and head to a pub on matchday. No easier way to meet people. Avoid talking politics if you can, especially if you're not left-wing and/or hang out with people in their late teens-mid 20s. We somehow tend to like bringing up political issues from foreign countries when conversing with foreigners, especially if the mainstream media disagrees with the country's policies. By the way, Poles are one of the largest minorities here and chances are quite high that you'll meet one.
