I have a gut feeling that it might secretly be a pretty fascinating region. A lot of these cities were huge and rich back in the Silk Road days. Merv, a city now in ruins in what is now Turkmenistan, is believed to have been the most populous city in the world for a time, and was a major center of Islamic scholarship.

No they don't. They don't eat pork but some could drink alco. Post soviet muslims often drink but don't eat pig meat, cause they are not used to it and there isn't much reason to do so. As a tatar, i rarely eat pork, only couple times when i was abroad or in western russian cities. I only like sausages and bacon really.

We are different though, language is the only thing that is actually kinda similar. Bashkir culture is based more around turkic steppe stuff, they are horseriders, hunt with eagles, drink horse cum, have different "houses"/tribes and had those up to the last century, basically were something like cossacks. Even bashkir dance and music sounds like something of their own and not made up, same for their ethnicity name, tatar is just "turk" basically.
Everything is artificial until it gets proclaimed as real.
