conciliarism makes no sense. for you councils are only ecumenical when the whole church accepts them including the laity. however, many people in the past did not except some of the councils and so split off like the oriental orthodox after the council of chalcedon. but then conciliarists say well they mustn't have been real christians, they were heretics so it doesn't count. then you ask 'how do you know who is a heretic?'. the conciliarist replies 'well the people who don't accept the councils'. so how can you possibly know when the 'whole church' has accepted a council to make it a real ecumenical council. the answer is that you can't without a pope.
