Mount Athos, Greece.

>It is governed as an autonomous polity within the Greek Republic. Mount Athos is home to 20 monasteries under the direct jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople
>Mount Athos has been inhabited since ancient times and is known for its nearly 1,800-year continuous Christian presence and its long historical monastic traditions, which date back to at least 800 A.D. and the Byzantine era

why

how do they get up there? Is that a helipad? Did they use a helicopter to build it?

the tablelands in newfoundland, i visited the island as a kid and it was absolutely surreal. one side of the road is the usual forests of canada and the other looks like it belongs on mars. it's a piece of the earth's mantle directly on the surface, and other than the orange rocks there was smaller rocks that looked like snake skin. despite it being late june the hills were high enough to have bits of snow on them, even though there were plenty of normal hills nearby that were even taller and there wasn't any snow on them. very bizarre place.

From r*ddit:
>From what I've found, Three of Vestman island best mountaineers climbed up the near vertical cliff face, near the top one guy had to stand on the others shoulders and pull the rest up as it was to high to reach the cliff edge. they then made a 'trail' down the cliff by drilling pikes and connecting them with a chain. I think its the rusted cable in this image. next a small crane pulley system was constructed to hoist up material and supplies, the remains of that system can be seen here. workers then stayed on the island in tents for a month during the constrution

fuck that's a shitty image, it was bigger at google. anyway this one is better to demonstrate how weird it is to be on that road, one side is canada and the other mars.

>it's a piece of the earth's mantle directly on the surface
