I'm not an expert in Brazilian history, but wasn't Brazil starting to become civilized at one point? And then the freed slaves moved into the cities in droves (hence the favelas) and mixed with the people living there.

I deal a lot with the brasilean comunity, but things are getting pretty bad as more people come, while there are no place for them in the major centres - so they do some jeitinho here and there, and eventualy you start to see them living like chinese and working on the limit of law (a fair number of them don't have working visas).

At this rate, in a couple of year we get another public outrage against brasilean emigrants, like the ones in the late 90's and early 00's - also due to excessive emigration in a short time frame.

Technically Portugal did create Brazil when the states of Maranhão and Brazil were fused together. And even further when João VI alone built the basis of the Brazilian state and created the Kingdom of Brazil. And he stayed in Rio for 7 years after Napoleon's defeat and only returned to Portugal after the Porto revolution (and yet still he wanted to send his son in his place)

The average brazilian is 60-70% european, those european genes coming from portugal in 90% of the cases.
People with italian ancestry are 10-15% of the country and most of them are only partially italian.
African ancestry is much less than you think. The average black brazilian has ~40% african ancestry and some ~50% portuguese ancestry, the rest usually being native ancestry.
native american is a relatively small part of our composition. most brazilians have between 5-20% native ancestry.

They were the ones that claimed Brazil back from the Dutch (the Portuguese king was ready to give the colony away and recognize Dutch rights over it).
