>Called into office just now for a meeting >"user, that money you recieved [2 months ago] was given to you in error" >I got about $1000 a few months back at the end of the quarter which said "Bonus" in my bank account and thought "cool" and said nothing about it >"We're being audited soon so.... you need to return that money to our company account. Here's our bank account number. Send it back to us immediatelt upon receiving your next paycheck. This is because we need a paper record of you returning it to us." >Have to return $1000 >If I don't I'll be fired This actually just happened. What in the fuck Jow Forums is this normal? Can they do that? I was even questioned why I didn't notice and return the money upon receiving it and they seem to think I'm the idiot for just accepting an unexplained "bonus."
quit, find a new job. don't let those indian givers bully you
Dominic Johnson
Good thread
Benjamin Smith
Over $1000 though? I mean I only make $3000 a month but still.... this seems like it shouldn't be legal to do. I am working in a foreign country though under a visa. This isn't the USA.
Leo Harris
Ask them if you can pay it back monthly but say you can only do like 3 dollars. Pay for half a year, then settle for half the amount. basically the sam hyde method when you got debt.
Elijah Baker
Kek I knew this was the Sam Hyde method as soon as you said $3. This isn't going to work since they only hire me on a per-year contract though and if I say no thry'll jist get rid of me on the spot.
They actually printed and brought my employment contract to the meaning and highlited mt salary to explain this ti me so I wouldn't refute them.
Christopher Morgan
Also, the money you earned last year, we're going to need some of that back too, that was a mistake. We shouldn't have paid you so much.
Brody Green
>Yeah....we're gonna need to you to go ahead and return all the money we paid you now. Hiring you was a mistake....
Alexander Bennett
just tell them to consider it a wash and that you know upper management will understand.
1. it lets them know ur not a retard 2. they sent it to you by law you dont have to give it back dude wtf? it said BONUS lmao 3. they literally are just trying to save there own asses. THEY fucked up and need you t osave there asses. so now that you understand the art of the deal what are yo ugoing to do next? u fuckn dumb shit dont u dare be worried about getting fired because if htey fire you , you have a mother fuckn law suit get a fucking clue jesus christ pls recorrd the meeting for tmororws post so i can tell u where to go from here. thx user.
Owen Campbell
Nah, its yours now, and they legally cant fire you over something like that. Tell them you already spent it, or some other such thing, or just tell them to fuck off
John Ramirez
Welcome to real life. Give it back or spend more in lawyers fees defending it.
Joseph Butler
Say you already spend the money and can only pay back 3 bucks, what else can they do? You didn‘t know it was not your money, you thought it was a bonus so you spend it all on cocaine and hookers. But since you are broke you can only pay them back a very tiny amount.
guess it all depends on how much you earn there, could earn there in the rest of your time there and if 1k is much for you or not.
Jack Powell
they aren't going to sue over $1000. they will spend at least that much for a lawyer to go through the motions
Nolan Miller
t. 17 year old boomers user, if you send someone money by accident it doesn't mean they own it. "Finders keepers" isn't as airtight as it sounds lol
Brandon Gonzalez
See they're requiring me to send it back thr day after I getcmy next paycheck. It already was spent on investments.
See in reality I'm too much of a pussy to stand up for this kind of thing and that's all there is to it. I'm working abroad so I don't have a lot of options.
Logan Perry
I mean I keep about 1,000 a month after all expenses anyway, so it's a month of work for me but this still sucks.
Matthew Bailey
they're trying to force THEIR MISTAKE onto you, they can blame you all they want saying "why didn't you question it" but you wouldn't have been forced into that position if it wasn't for THEIR MISTAKE
take anons advice in here, tell them you CANNOT AFFORD to pay it all back and that you can only make small payments each payday because your expenses are high and you're essentially living paycheck-to-paycheck.
Don't take ownership over their mistake like they want you to. Not Your Fault.
If they fire you, whatever, life goes on, you get a little wiser, learn how fucking dumb some companies are, and move on to find something else. They can't even keep their accounting straight and make errors in payroll, sounds like a shit company anyway.
Leo Moore
So Jow Forums seems pretty split with the consensus being to just give it all back...
Luis Morales
you retard join the union and fucking hammer your employers go batshit crazy about them trying to steal back your bonus through a loophole.
Thomas Stewart
>$1000 If you think that's a lot of money, then i feel sorry for you.
Nolan Taylor
tell them that you’ll send it back on paper if management personally give you $1000 of their own cash. easy.
Tyler Lewis
give them back their money fucking poorfag money you don't deserve and which is sent to you by mistake is not yours fucking jew this is the law
Cameron Martinez
Like what the other user said, don't fall for that trap. If you return the money instantly, you will be admitting to a mistake that they've made. Just say you can only afford to return the money in multiple payments.
Leo Morales
Someone is trying to save their ass. Fuck them. Tell them upper management would understand. It was a bonus.
Evan Smith
ay man that could be a test from the management. like one time the manager asked to me come to work on holidays since everyone else will be off, and i was instantly like 'alright i'll be here'. guess what? got promoted to 3 positions higher than what i had on the spot.
Noah Sullivan
Thats no test, just regular accounting fuck up. When i worked illegally underage i got once paycheck of another employee. Didn't say anything and no one asked. I say fuck em dont let them pin it on you.
Employment laws are a little different, but I have a feeling they'd win a court case since you were given no notice of receiving a bonus so you had no reason to expect that bonus and you never checked to make sure it was not in error.
David Carter
No one on here apparently knows shit about how such situations actually work. Real life isn't like the blockchain where if you send your money to the wrong address, you're just shit out of luck. You will have to look up the specific legislature of the country you're in, but in most countries you can demand back the money you erroneously sent to someone, and the statute of limitations for it is almost always longer than 2 months. Basically your boss can take you to court over it if such a possibility is encoded to the law of the place you're working (and it probably is).
Cameron Allen
To expand on that a little, any money you receive has to have a legal basis. If you don't have any documents stating that you have been granted a $1000 bonus, then you don't have a legal basis to receive that money and the giver can demand it back. But check the specific laws of your country of residence, of course.
Ryan Brooks
Ask your state's Department of Labor for advice. Cases like these are too specific for us to give meaningful answers because the nuances vary from state to state.
>going to court over $1000 More like he'd just get fired
Hudson Reed
It depends on how much the job or the money mean to OP
If he values his job, the relationship/networking/reference opperttunity with his employer can have in his future, he should either just pay the money back quickly or arrange to pay it back over time.
If not and he doesn’t give a fuck about his job and wants the money then play hard ball.
It’s all about what he values and what he’s willing to risk losing. Personally, it’s only $1000 so in my opinion there’s no fucking way it’s worth his job(especially if he earns $3000 a month).
Jace White
What country is it OP? If you’re a JETard I’m going to laugh so fucking hard at you.
Hunter Campbell
On what grounds? In most jurisdictions this would be a completely separate court case, not directly tied to your job. Someone who accidentally sent you money without a legal basis is demanding that money back, just because it happens to be your boss doesn't mean he has grounds to fire you. Don't know about worker protection laws in whatever shithole OP is currectly cucking in, though.
Connor Roberts
id stop showing up. definitely dont give it back. in fact, if you have any possible way to steal from the clmpany or the individuals involved that maybbe worth pursuing, just since they sound like morons so it would probably be easy
Austin Green
A thousand dollars is a lot of money you dumbfuck >lmao no it isn't you poorfag :D
You would be assmad if you lost $1000 You would be enraged if you bought a $1000 ice cream You would be buttblasted if you were tricked and lost $1000
Jack Wilson
Shoot the place up.
Alexander Phillips
Everything legally needs to be in writing. Tell them to write something up explaining exactly what the error was, and how it happened. Just sending money back is a scam. Force them to document everything. They likely won't. And then they have nothing.
Jacob Turner
I earn $3000 a month but my fucking wife and expenses takes $2000 of it. This is a topic for a different thread I guess.
Jeremiah Jenkins
Return it dummy Or get fired, wont find a new job because of rep, and the money would be returned anyway
Trust me I dont think they are bluffing. Do you want to work with tension everyday because you kept your bosses shekels?
Let the jew win, just take it. Cant win em all Pal
Bentley Howard
I say keep it, but send it back might be their plan A, and they can as a last resort take it out of your paycheck, but perhaps not without writing and documentation
So yeah keep it until they can get in writing what their mistake was, no circles on your contract, make them spell it out legally
Nathan Howard
Tfw op really did receive a small bonus >be op in a rush to get home one night >op cuts off the hr bitch in traffic >she recognizes his car >"fuck that little faggot we take bonus back" Lol give if back or be fired wagecuck
Gavin Hughes
I have to say I kind of agree with this now.
Logan Diaz
Tell them to fuck off. The business making a mistake isn't your problem.
Xavier Mitchell
Had this happen for like 26 thousand dollars over 3 years-they docked my pay so I took home 1/2 of what I normally did. My local union went along with it until I complained to the national and then they stopped docking it and gave back what they took. 8 years later we got 13 thousand because they figured they weren’t paying us high enough rate-once again the national did it not our local.
Ryder Brown
I lost 22k over shitcoins. Return this fucking lunch money and continue milking these imbeciles until you land a better job.
Jace Rodriguez
Give the money back Op but don't send it till you get a written receipt for it that includes the reasons that you're sending it back to them, signed by the asswipes that pulled you into the office and demanded the money back. Also record every meeting you have with them on your phone. No receipt = no money sent from you. Start the conversation with that thought in your mind.
Kevin Price
Hahahahahahahahah, gold
Liam Bell
Tell them that you don't have the money anymore.
Also tell them that they'll take your money from your cold dead hands.
Dude, are u in a first world country? They can’t fire you because they made a mistake, there are laws protecting your rights. They should be apologising to you and begging for the money back not bullying you, they’re only bullying because they think you don’t know you’re rights and you clearly don’t.
Tell them you already spend the money and they have no right to give you an ultimatum and if they want to fire you you’ll go to the union, it wasn’t your mistake, it was their mistake and they have no right to pressure you and play with your life like that. Tell them that if they fired you with no just cause you’re willing to take them to court.
If they’re willing to go ahead then it’s better to get fired now and not work for a shit company who will fuck you over again and again but I’m sure they will re think their strategy.
company is a badly run fuckup in financial trouble owith auditors You need a new job anyway Cite immediate financial difficulty and that they can deduct it from your paycheck at some marginal rate if they give you a tetter saying that it was clear that you received it in good faith as it was referred to as a bonus and that they are in error and get a new job
Adrian Kelly
If it genuinely said 'Bonus' on your payroll slip and wasn't just tacked ontop of your salary by accident then you are entitled to keep it. If it was a payroll error and was lumped into your salary by accident then they have a valid excuse to ask for it back.
