If you read the manifesto his dad had a ton of money problems, being in the "film business" doesn't mean you're rich. His family certainly wasn't poor, but in Southern CA they definitely weren't rich (he even whines that he has to live in some neighborhoods that weren't great). His family had some mild connections that mean they could go to some movie premiers, but that's it. And again, not terribly special for the groups of people he wanted to get in with in that area.
