Suprised your not asking for a friend actually. The culture of the industry I work is in ways very much like that of 4chans: banter is about the same, personal attacks are worse and more underhanded, autism levels are equal, occasions of people going off into autistic meltdowns/rages are normalized and accepted, and pretty much everyone accepts that once you do the job you never leave the profession. It's an interesting comparison really, in addition the twisted humor of Jow Forums is honestly tame in comparison. So, I guess it's no suprise then that a certain attraction to this site happens, since it provides another social outlet beyond their work, in a community that embodies alot of their social norms.

I'm a Paramedic it's what I've done my entire adult life. The culture is absolutely twisted beyond normal socital standards, no matter the professional attitude they give off. From my understanding prison guards are slightly more cynical/judgemental about society. It's funny to me reading through rekt threads and the seeing the outrage knowing that if someone at work responded to that situation, it would be the running joke for the next month. Summer is always fun because it brings out the kids roasting over an open fire meme, or the melted nig nog picture being hung next to the microwave. CO poisioning in the winter brings out the gas chamber meme's. In the business sense most of society thinks we are do gooders and actually care about them, and their emotional wellbeing. This same idea holds true for nurses and doctors also. What society fails to realize is that we are paid to be nice to you and "care" about you. If you dont think we are cracking jokes about you or your family members medical situation, you are sadly mistaken. It's funny how prolific the delusion is with people and healthcare, biggest meme of all time really.

It's great to have a clear cut choice and be able to take the moral high ground as is the case in most professions. This board is a prime example of the one thing everyone strives for, which is control in what ever sense the individual defines it. When someone calls for us, their sense of being in control is gone. They are incapable of controlling the situation and need someone to assist them in getting that control back. This creates an interesting enviroment because, most people will do anything within their power to regain that sense of control. Which in turn creates the morally grey area that I deal with in my professional life. There is no textbook way or absolutes to doing my job, only what is reasonably right given the circumstances.

You forgot one aspect, how much you can fuck with someone on many different levels right to their face. Yes everyone in health care/public service does it. Altrusim only goes as far as whats needed to avoid any negative consequences defined in the policies and procedures of an organization. In the public service sector those are given much more flexability. Because, well whats not to say that, due to the highly emotional circumstances sorrounding the event and your perception of the actions taken by those you called to aid you in your time of need are a little off due to that previously mentioned emotional distress you had.

Heres an interesting thought I've had since the sky king incident last week. What's stopping these types of incidents from happening on a nation wide scale? Like you mention sarcasm and humor is used to blunt the situation in a paramedics case. This dude had stress in a certain context yes but, not near the levels one would experience in other jobs. It shows really no bad the system and its need for change, when you have a baggage handler deciding that, to experience life in any capacity he needs to go do a barrel roll. It's ironic to me considering your stance, in relation to my own. I'm not being edgy in the least to be honest, my views and opinions are actually mild in comparison to the industry as a whole. I appreciate what you have said and have capped most of this thread for further consideration. You and others need to consider and understand that the world is far from neat and organized, with everything fitting into it's perfect little spot. Life gets out of control and downright messy at times, we seem to ignore this fact as a whole in society taking the out of sight out mind approach. When someone who wades through this mess on a daily basis expresses their thoughts on the matter, you see what happens. People become uncomfotable in discussing the reality of the world beyond themselves, or they find sick humor in the coping stategies, we have developed to survive the circumstances of our enviroment. To say I am sick and twisted is accurate based on a clean cut understanding of the world where people progress through their daily lives with bad outcomes only related to what they hear in the news, or the accident they see during their commute.

Another point to consider this from is the returning vet meme. As a whole they represent a sub-culture of the society that we live in that performs actions outside of the normal constraints of what we think of during our 9-5 work day. It is also noteworthy to mention just how stupid most people are when they think about the health care industry as a whole in the US. People need to understand that as individuals their health problems, and the reasons they go to the doctor is what generates revenue for the organization. In relation the more times the doctor can get you to walk through their office door to see them the more times they can bill your insurance. I mean not to sounds /pol like I know this will but, in a statistical sense 150,000 people a year having a negative drug reaction is minimal and not worth investment right, unless you spin that drug reaction to be related to narcotic pain killers. Whats interesting is that in comparison to those who die due to infections caused by infections due to in-patient stays(hospitalization/surgery's) blows that number out of the water at 750,000. So whats the real problem then, from a business sense I would say the narc issue is an easy fix and shifts the blame away from healthcare. To solve the infection ratios makes health care take a good long look at it's internal procedures. And yeah no matter how good of a person you think your doctor or anyone is that goes into health care, at the end of the day they have to put on a smile and deal with everyone in our society in whatever capacity their job dictates. All they can do in most cases is smile and nod as they are degraded which is why they are compensated monetarily so well. You are also naive to think my humor is black, like I previously mentioned it is actually mild in comparison.You need to realize how insulated and sheltered society is to the harshness of the "bad things" in their lives... No one.
