Block One, where Dan Larimer is a CTO, build EOSIO. You can use the EOSIO software to start your own net. It's like Hyperledger but with coins. EOSIO and the EOS main net that's running on EOSIO is using dPoS. You what dPoS is and how it's different from Pow?
In PoW you have anyone join the network and have an opportunity to mine blocks. When you mine a block, you actually put all transactions in a block and for doing that you get a rewards. In bitcoin you get smth like 12 bitcoins per block. There's no use trying to compete for blocks in bitcoin. PoW wastes a lot of resources that's why Dan Larimer ((invented)) dPoS.
dPoS does need your machine to solve a cryptographic puzzle like in PoW, so you don't need a mega hardware machine to compete with other anons in block mining to get rewards per block. In dPoS those who produce blocks are elected by those who hold the network's coins. Coins like EOS. Those who are voted to produce blocks are called - yeah - Block Producers.
There are 21 Block Producers who produce blocks on the EOS main net and there are 180+ those on stand by. The 21 are elected by EOS coin holders. Each of the 21 BPs gets to produce a block and get a reward for each block. When EOS costs $5, the EOS BPs get around $10k per day for block production. Those that are on stand-by and not part of an actual round of block production among the 21 BPs, they also get rewards for standing by. Good money too.
Are you following me so far? it's very simple
Now, for the BPs to get the votes they need either of those (or both): a) a big and involved community and/or b) those that have dozens and hundreds of millions in EOS.
If you've been following EOS you know that this was and is a shitshow.
You can check EOS BPs here btw eospark.com
The EOS voting and the network turned out to be a centralized shitshow with whales voting for BPs.
So, you remember that EOSIO is SOFTWARE, not the actual main EOS chain. and anyone can use EOSIO to start their own chain/mainnet provided that it's supported by communities. So Telos telosfoundation.io
